Knob-and-tube (K&T) is an early electrical wiring method used from roughly 1880 to 1940. Wires run through ceramic knobs and tubes — without a ground wire and with insulation that degrades over time. Most Portland Craftsman bungalows and pre-war homes still have some K&T remaining.
K&T wiring has no ground, can't support modern electrical loads, and becomes brittle with age. Insulation that touches K&T (insulation contractors sometimes pack it tightly) creates a fire risk. Many Oregon insurance companies now require K&T removal as a condition of coverage.
A full K&T rewire for a 1,200–2,000 sq ft Portland bungalow typically runs $8,000–$18,000 and takes 3–5 days. We use wire-fishing techniques to minimize wall and ceiling damage — most homeowners require very little drywall repair.
Not all K&T needs to be replaced immediately — we help you prioritize. Kitchen and bathroom circuits are highest priority (moisture + load), followed by bedroom circuits. We'll give you an honest assessment of what needs to go now vs. what can wait.
